LiDAR is a method of measuring distance from a target by illuminating the target with a pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging and it is increasingly used in driverless cars to sense the world around them. By bouncing the laser light off nearby objects, it can create a 3D map of the surroundings. LiDAR applications use photomultiplier tubes to detect the reflections, and the time of their occurrence allows the distance to the surrounding object to be calculated. The photomultiplier tubes are often gated so that they are not affected by the initial laser blast.
